Job Description

Accountant The East-West Center is seeking a detail-oriented, professional team member to serve as an Accountant in the Office of Administration. The Accountant assists the Controller and is responsible for managing and reporting financial information for the Center and the East-West Center Foundation. The Accountant maintains the Center’s general ledger, contracts and grants, and fixed assets systems ensuring the systems comply with applicable professional, federal and state requirements. The Accountant also provides professional accounting advice to managers and other staff involved in financial matters; prepares analyses of financial information and presents that information in a meaningful manner, including recommending changes for improvements; and assists the Controller and Director of Administration with other accounting, auditing, and/or management study projects. Major duties include: Prepares audit workpapers, schedules, liaises and works with certified public accountants on the annual Center and Foundation audits; prepares the Center’s and Foundation’s annual income tax returns; reconciles accounting issues arising from audits and preparation of tax returns; and reviews changes in tax laws affecting business tax returns and advises on the impact of such changes to nonprofit organizations. The Accountant also ensures timely recording of financial transactions and examination of documents and accounting reports to assure conformance with generally accepted accounting principles, OMB, and other Federal and State regulations; informs management of anomalies in accounting system transactions; and develops new reports to satisfy management and user information requirements. The Accountant oversees the accounts receivable (billing and collection) function and follows up on delinquent account holders; implements other internal control procedures including reconciling bank accounts, accounts receivable records and general ledger account balances; maintains the contracts and grants system and files; collaborates with and advises other staff on how to expend funds in accordance with grant agreements; and interprets contracts and agreements. The incumbent also ensures fixed assets are accounted for in the Center’s financial records; analyzes accounting system effectiveness and recommends changes; assists the Controller and other management officials with account analyses or management studies; works effectively and cooperatively with other individuals in support of the Center’s mission; and works with vendors or financial institutions to ensure the Center adheres to applicable standards including Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) transactions and other standards as necessary. The initial appointment to the position of Accountant will be for a period of two years. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting or finance plus four years of progressively responsible experience in accounting operations for an organization. Experience must have required thorough knowledge of and ability to utilize accounting principles, theories, methods, techniques, and systems for financial and cash management and reporting. Working knowledge of federal and state income tax regulations and federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) circulars. Experience performing financial audits. Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge and provide account advice to managers, analyze financial information to reconcile accounting issues and recommend changes, and work independently in carrying out responsibilities. Strong analytical, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to meet and deal effectively with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Accounting experience with a Certified Public Accounting firm. Related work experience with an educational or non-profit organization. SALARY: $72,787 per year which includes a cost-of–living allowance (COLA) currently at 10.28% (subject to change) and an attractive benefits package.
