The seminar will review the tax issues that should be considered in the course of advising clients regarding the settlement of legal disputes and the trusts often created in connection with such settlements.

Objectives
After completing this course the participant will be able to:
- Identify the income, gift, and estate tax issues associated with legal settlements in general and the specific tax issues related to the trusts often created in connection with such settlements.
- Determine the tax impact of a planned settlement and any trust to be created to receive settlement funds, in light of the details of the legal dispute and the proposed structure of the settlement and any related trusts.
- Identify the facts and issues the IRS may consider in reviewing the tax implications of a legal settlement.
- Recognize the tax implications of communications between parties, pleadings, orders of the course, settlement agreements, and other documents that may arise in connection with a legal dispute.
- Describe the tax reporting requirements associated with a legal settlement and any related trust.
